What is Street Dance?
Street dance is an umbrella term that refers to various dance styles that originated in the streets and urban spaces. It emerged from popular culture and social dance in America during the 1970s and has since spread internationally. People would dance anywhere that had an open available space: a park, a street, or a party.
Depending on who you ask, you’ll get a wider or narrower range of dances that fall under the category of street dance. Some of the most popular styles of street dance include hip-hop, locking, popping, and house dance. Street dance has continued to evolve and influence other dance styles, including contemporary and modern dance. It has also become a popular form of dance in music videos, films, and television shows
What is Hip Hop Dancing?
Hip-hop dance is essentially a subcategory of Street Dance. Hip Hop originated in African American and Latino communities in New York City, during the 1970s. It encompasses a wide range of movements, including breaking, popping, and locking.
Breaking, also known as breakdancing, is characterized by acrobatic and athletic movements performed on the ground. Locking is a dance style that emphasizes quick and precise movements of the arms and legs, while popping is characterized by sudden contractions and relaxations of the muscles.
