What is Contemporary dance?

Contemporary is a highly creative and expressive style of dance. It’s about interpreting abstract thoughts, concepts and emotions into fluid dance movements. 

Contemporary combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary is one of the most current and popular styles of dance today and is often seen on dance talent shows.

Contemporary vs Commercial – What is the difference?

Commercial and contemporary are more recently popularised dance styles and both have a foundation in multiple other styles. Commercial dance incorperates such a broad range of movements, that it can be hard to sucinctly describe. But think hard hitting, fierce, sassy, confident dancing with a strut in your step.

Contemporary, on the other hand dance has its foundations in modern dance, classical ballet, and lyrical dance. Contemporary dance choreography is often more abstract movements, incorporating lots of floor work and interpretive storytelling, whilst also executing classical dance lines and shapes with their body.
